What is PLA?

PLA is a biodegradable and compostable thermoplastic made from renewable resources such as corn starch and sugarcane.

What is PLA used for? 

PLA is used to produce a wide range of products, including packaging materials, disposable tableware, textiles, and 3D printing filaments.

How is PLA made?

The process of making PLA involves 6 steps.

     1.        Raw material preparation: Harvest and process renewable resources such as corn starch and sugarcane to extract starch and sugars.

     2.        Fermentation: Use bacteria to ferment the extracted starch and sugars to produce lactic acid. 

     3.        Purification: Purify the lactic acid to remove impurities and water. 

     4.        Polymerization: Polymerize the purified lactic acid to produce polylactic acid (PLA).

     5.        Pelletization: Cool and cut the PLA into small pellets for use as feedstock.

     6.        Processing: Melt and process the PLA pellets using techniques such as extrusion, injection molding, or 3D printing to manufacture biodegradable and compostable products such as packaging materials, disposable tableware, textiles, and 3D printing filaments.

 

Is PLA eco-friendly?  

Yes, PLA is eco-friendly; it generates three times less CO2 than producing traditional plastic. It also emits three times less CO 2
